India at the Oscars

The 81st Academy Awards at the Kodak Studio in Los Angeles was indeed a proud event for India. When you say Bollywood accounts for the most number of films produced in a year, you definitely need to have recognitions like these talking about the work that is done. And Slumdog Millionaire definitely has won the bread for us (now do not get yourself into an assumption that i am creating some kind of a link or proprietorship of Bollywood for this movie), and the man inspiring these technicians to reach this level, Mr. Danny Boyle deserves a lot of respect and praise.

Men Who Made The Nation Proud

Resul Pookutty:
Since Mr.Resul Pookutty was the first Indian to actually grab the award during the event, let us take a look at what his speech meant to the whole nation.

"This is unbelievable. We cant believe this. Ladies and gentlemen. Sorry (Excited, and out of words). I share the stage with two magicians, you know, who created the very ordinary sounds of Bombay, the cacophony of Bombay, into a soul-stirring, artful resonance called Slumdog Millionaire.

I come from a country and a civilization that given the universal word. That word is preceded by silence, followed by more silence. That word is Om. So I dedicate this award to my country.

Thank you, Academy, this is not just a sound award, this is history being handed over to me. My sincere and deepest gratitude to my teachers, Danny Boyle, Christian Colson, Paul Ritchie, Pravesh and everybody who
has contributed to this film, Glenn Freemantle and all the sound mixers. I dedicate this to you guys. Thank you, Academy. Thank you very much."

Also to be noted is that two other re-recording mixers Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke along with Mr.Pookutty were awarded in this category.

A R Rahman:

There is nothing new when you say that Mr.A R Rahman is a genuis, a prodigy, a pioneer in his specialization and to top it all, a great human being. Personally, he is the person whom i inspire a lot in my life.

Why is he so inspiring?

  • He has always got an approach towards life to see or take only positive things. So, the positive vibes everywhere, and he is capable of spreading love and peace through his chords.
  • Likes what he does. He, truly is a pioneer in his area of specialization. I think everybody should try becoming the same in their respective fields.
  • Never takes success into his head.
  • TIG (Trust In God). Songs like Shakti Kodu from Baba, Khwaja Mere Khwaja from Jodha Akbar, Maula Maula from Delhi 6 are all songs that are beyond the level that I think, music can reach. (If you can remember more songs, make use of the comments :-) )

Now, talking about the music of Slumdog Millionaire. We all got mixed reviews like

  • This man has given much better music than this.
  • The song Jai Ho is no way near the competency level of Oscars.

Well, people, please be optimistic. This single album has definitely resulted in the whole world turning their head towards India and Indian music. Am sure people from the west will now try sneaking into more compositions, and obviously appreciate them.

This is what The Mozart of Madras has to say when he was given away the award for The Best Original Score for the movie Slumdog Millionaire.

"Before coming I was excited and terrified..the last time I felt like that during my marriage. There is this dialogue from a hindi film called meri pass maa hein..which means - I have nothing but i have my mother..My mother is here..her blessings are there with me..I am grateful for her to come here all the way..

I want to thank the academy for being so kind, all the judy members. I want to thank all the crew of slumdog, gulzar, musicians from chennai and mumbai and I want to say something in Tamil, which i normally say at every award Elaa Pugazhum Iraivanukey - God is great! Thank you."

This was certainly a moment to remember. Makes you feel even better when you get to listen to some Indian language at the global media stage. Soon after the crowd started applauding for this musical genuis, he had to rush to the back stage to grab a mike, as he had to perform two tracks from the same movie that got nominated for Best Song category. And then, as expected, he won the second oscar of the night and these were his words then.

"I just want to thank again the whole crew of Slumdog Millionaire, especially Danny Boyle for giving such a great opportunity. And the whole, all the people from Mumbai. The essence of the film which is about optimism and the power of hope in the lives, and all my life I had a choice of hate and love. I chose love and I'm here. God bless"

NOTE : No other musicians are intended to be hurt in this post.

"If you like something, appreciate it. And if you don't, keep your mouth and expressions shut !! " ( I mean, DO NOT CRITICIZE !!!)

Kodaikanal - A thing of beauty !!

A thing of beauty is a joy for ever:
Its loveliness increases; it will never
Pass into nothingness; but still will keep
A bower quiet for us, and a sleep
Full of sweet dreams, and health, and quiet breathing.
- John Keats

A thing of beauty is a joy forever. Typical strenuous IT life, no regular weekends, no vacations in the past, and now, a college reunion. A place like Kodaikanal is NOT worth complaining at all. And, in this year of recession, i think the word 'Complain' can take a break from the dictionaries.

Makes you feel even better when these pictures are captured out of a 2 Megapixel mobile camera. :-) . Quite obvious ain't?
